This is Your Lucky Day

Written by admin on Sunday, April 22nd, 2007 in Self Improvement, Spirituality.

This is your lucky day, if you apply the following good-luck lesson to your life.

During his ten-year study of luck, professor Richard Wiseman found that lucky people use many psychological strategies to turn bad luck into good luck. They might automatically imagine how things could have been worse, for example, in order to eliminate any paralyzing sense of hopelessness in the current bad situation. They also look at what can be done, and concentrate on that.

Have you heard the saying, “If life gives you lemons, make lemonade?” That is the frame of mind of a lucky person. In their minds, there are always motivating questions, like, “What can I do with this situation? Could this be lucky in some way? How can I make lemonade from these lemons?” How can I make this my lucky day?

The way we see the problem is the problem. – Stephen Covey

Problems Are Opportunities

In his book, “Screw It, Let’s Do It,” Richard Branson has a great story about turning a problem into an opportunity. He and his wife were in the Virgin Islands, and the flight to Puerto Rico had been canceled. There were a lot of disappointed people, and they were all sitting around doing nothing. What could they do, after all, but wait until there was another flight?

Branson doesn’t think that way, however. He found a plane, and asked how much it would be to charter it one way to Puerto Rico. He was told $2,000. Looking around at the number of people waiting, he did some quick math. Then he took a small chalkboard and wrote on it, “Virgin Airways.” Below that he wrote “One way flight to Puerto Rico, $39.”

After the 52nd person signed up, he was making a profit. Although he didn’t actually start his airline until later, this was the inspiration. A problem is sometimes an opportunity. This one lead to the creation of a major airline – but only because of his approach to problems…

How to be a Lucky Guy (Or Gal)

Written by admin on Sunday, April 22nd, 2007 in Self Improvement, Spirituality.

Here is a short but true story of a lucky guy, or at least a guy that got lucky pretty often.

It was years ago, when I used to work with a bunch of single guys. One, whom I’ll call Dave, was not well liked by the other guys at work. This was due in part to the fact that he was a jackass. There might have also been a bit of envy involved, since Dave seemed to easily get dates with many of the beautiful women in the area.

This was a mystery to many. Why did a jackass go out with all the women that the other guys just dreamed about? The solution was clear to anyone who paid attention: Because he asked them out! They usually said no, but he just kept asking, until some of them said yes.

Seriously, isn’t this so common? We wonder at the “luck” of others, when the key is that those lucky people are doing the simple things we are afraid to do.

Who is more likely to get a date? A man who asks out one woman or a man who asks out ten?

Who is more likely to get a raise at work, a woman who just quietly does a good job, or one that does a good job and asks for a raise?

This is obvious stuff, right? Almost all such “lessons” are, but we need to be reminded. We also need to take action to put lessons into practice.

Recently, I was at one of those free money-making seminars, and the speaker asked who wanted a hundred-dollar bill. A few hands went up. When he asked who would come up and get it, only a few out of hundreds approached the stage. He handed the bill to the first one there, while the crowd sat watching, too afraid to embarrass themselves.

We can see that fear gets in the way of having “good luck.” What can we do then to have more courage? Well, there are self-improvement products, such as seminars and tapes and books that can teach us techniques for overcoming fear. I am particularly impressed with NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) techniques myself. These things can help.

Feel The Fear And Do It Anyhow

A more immediate way to overcome fear is to start acting in the face of it. Start with small steps and work your way up. You can’t wait until the fear is gone to act. Courage is being afraid and acting anyhow. The more you do this, the more you see that courage is not…
