Mentalism FAQ – How to Amaze Your Friends and Family with Your Magic Tricks
Featured Tips by Christopher Lam
Some mentalism FAQ that are on everybody’s mind are:
What’s a Mentalist? A mentalist is a psychic entertainer whose illusions feature the obvious capability to read minds, foretell the future, and see distant and concealed objects. Based primarily on Wikipedia, mentalism is a performing art in which the expert uses his 5 senses to make the appearance of a 6th.
Performers may claim to be demonstrating mystical capabilities like telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, and telekinesis. Potentially, mentalism is a branch of wizardry, featuring lots of the same fundamental tools and abilities in its performance. Some mentalists use these methodologies to imply that they really possess mystical powers.
Is a Mentalist psychic? The term mystic has been a bit overused and abused in today’s media. It conjures up everything from carnival mystics to the famous Mystic Hot Line. I suspect it is correct that everybody has the potentiality to exercise some level of psychic or non-physical power. Very similar to a sense that may be sharpened to compensate for the loss of another sense or the way human memory can be expanded and sharpened, one’s psychic potential is always an unknown till it is exposed and explored.
The facility to target that potential and to grow its limits is at the center of a mystic’s psychic power. So in a way, yes, a mentalist is a mystic.
Is mentalism a practice that may be taught? Any one can become a mentalist if they spend enough time studying and practicing the art and they have the eagerness it takes to persist. Anybody can do easy mentalism if they have the resources to learn. Particularly with the Net the chances of learning mentalism are unlimited.
How can mentalists read your mind? They don’t read your intelligence, they just use some tricks and find out your thoughts indirectly. For instance, one trick is when the mentalist makes you pick a card, and after some agreements he tells what your card was without looking through the card deck.
These types of tricks are simple ones that may be done by anybody. But what about great routines? When a mentalist selects somebody in the spectators, asks him to take an object from his pocket. In the meantime, the mentalist is turned around, he stares at the object, thinks what it may be, and asks the person to put it back. All of a sudden, the mentalist turns around, goes into a little trance and tells what the object was.
Once more, this just a parlor trick as many others. For people that love this trick it isn’t recommended to inform the solution, but there are numerous sources which provide great info about stuff like this.
There are plenty of folks who actually enjoy such shows and some are curious because nothing of this is actually real.

How to Perform Mentalism
Featured Tips by Cheri Brennan
This is a common question that is often asked by a beginner magician. Learning card tricks is one thing, staging an act in front of an audience is another feat of its own. For those of you who are seeking for information, you will find some useful tips here.
To perform mentalism is an art. Magicians/mentalists are like artists but the skills behind each of these professions are different. To be successful as a mentalist, there are a few principles of stage magic you have to learn, not forgetting the act of creating an illusion of mind control and mind reading. Here are some principles that are often inseparable from such a performance or stage act.
1. Presentation
Presentation or what people call stage presence is important. You need to learn how to captivate the attention of your audience so that they are not distracted by the surroundings. You need them to only focus on the object or hand movement that you want them to see.
2. Persuasion
Persuasion is another powerful principle. The act itself is to convince the audience to follow what you say and what you do, making them trust you as a person. Observe the way magicians talk to their audiences and answer questions. They are always ready to add humor to it so that their audiences will let their guards down and not be on high alert.
3. Throwing a Smoke Screen
By this, we are talking about misguiding or misdirecting your audiences to something which is in fact a smoke screen. While the act is in play, you are actually doing something else in the background under concealment. But you will not want the folks to spot it. They are often misled by the performer to give their 100% attention to the smoke screen.
4. Add Entertainment Value
Some tricks can look gory such as chain-sawing or even body piercing. But you will realize that the shows are never without funny, interesting acts like starting with card tricks or simple magic tricks. These are important to warm up your spectators.
You see, learning how to perform mentalism is both an art as well as science. If you are just beginning, it is important to pick up a few useful guides to learn the tricks of the trade.
