Teaser Content and Membership Sites – Is it Good Marketing?

Featured Tip by Rebecca Prescott

If you’ve had a look at a few content rich membership sites recently, you may have noticed they use teaser articles. This is where they print an excerpt of the article, with an active link to read the full article. Only problem is, the full article is usually under virtual lock and key – you discover, upon clicking the link, that you have to be a member to read the full article.

So, is this a good way to get members to join your site or not?

The Reader Experiences Frustration …

I don’t know about you, but I get pretty frustrated when I click a link that says, ‘To read the full article, click here’, only to find out they want my money first!

I guess if it was more obvious that this was members-only content, I would be more philosophical. But once I’ve clicked, waited for the page to load, only to find out I was essentially wasting my time, I feel a bit ripped off. It certainly doesn’t put me in a ‘buy’ mood. I haven’t yet joined a membership site when that was my introduction to it.

The Balance Between Arousing Curiosity – And Annoying People

I can understand why membership owners do it (aside from the fact that this is probably how their membership manager is set up). You want to get people interested in joining your site, but you don’t want to give them everything for free.

Whilst this is a valid concern, I do think that if the teaser articles are the only content your non-member can read, you’re doing yourself a disservice.

By giving people some other blog posts or articles to read, you’re letting them see that you do indeed offer good quality information. It establishes your credibility, and effectively pre-sells your paid content.

Whilst not everyone will join your membership, at least by giving them some free content to read, you will somewhat allay that sense of frustration. And in the process, turn some visitors simply browsing, into buyers.

People are suspicious online. Not only do they have to worry about being ripped off by someone they don’t know, but many have bought poor quality products before, and are wary of doing so again. Your free content, without giving away everything, can go some way to easing that suspicion.

Teaser Content Does Have Its’ Place …

Teaser content does succeed very well in creating a sense of curiosity. If it is handled well, and is not the only content in the public part of the site, then it can serve as a good introduction to the benefits of your paid membership. It is only when it exists without any other freely available content, that there is a problem.

Content And Search Engine Traffic

There’s another reason you want to have some free content on your site. Given that it will be tightly themed around the niche your membership site is in, it has the potential to deliver you a lot of free traffic from the organic search results. That traffic is potential customers – gained at no cost to you. Without that search engine traffic, you’re going to have to work much harder at your marketing efforts.

Like any marketing, it is a matter of finding the balance between intriguing your visitor, whilst still conveying a sense of credibility about your membership. Teaser content on its’ own will provide curiosity, but not credibility. However, by adding other free content, in the form of blog posts or articles, you can have the best of both worlds. You are able to keep your premium content for your subscribers, whilst still giving your visitors a sense of what you’re about, and your depth of knowledge on your topic.

4 Video Marketing Ideas to Boost Product Sales and Promote Your Website

Featured Tips by Richard Sandoval

With the explosion of video sharing and viral videos, there are a variety of video marketing ideas available but not all are applicable to every type of business. The following ideas discuss developing content for businesses that sell products and to some extent can be modified to work for some services.

1) Product Demonstrations

Product demo videos usually are made to demonstrate how your product works ( the step-by-step instructions) and highlights the features that differentiate your product from that of your competitors. However, you should make sure that you weave in the benefits of your product on your video script. Software screen captures, such as those taken by Camtasia or Screenflow, or a high impact demo by a presenter are all excellent ways of showing how your product or service works. In business to consumer marketing, these would be targeted at buyers of larger ticket items who want additional, detailed information about your product.

A popular example of this type of video is Blendtec’s blender ad campaign on YouTube.

2) Product Presentations

Product (or service) presentation videos are usually beneficial early in the buying cycle. Product or service presentations focus on benefits of your product from your customer’s perspective. This type of video should speak clearly to the specific reasons why your product solves a specific business or personal problem. They are used to help your customers and prospects showcase the benefits of your products and services, provide your customer your unique selling proposition and help differentiate your product from those of your competitors.

3) Product Reviews

Ideally, your business would benefit by product reviews that are provided by a trusted third party. However, customer product reviews can really work as well. Using a variety of search terms on Google, or another search engine, you can find third party video reviews from sites like YouTube, Facebook and various business portals. Only link to these sites if they provide credible video content about your product or service. You can also partner or joint venture with trusted third parties to create video product reviews for your own products.

4) Visual Stories

Quickly rising in popularity, visual stories employ illustrations, animations, Flash animations and motion graphics with a voice-over to explain complex products or services in a simple and compelling manner. These type of videos are developed to give additional information to customers who have already decided to purchase from you but need additional detail to finalize their decision. These types of interactive ads tend to be more expensive and are therefore appropriate for companies with larger marketing budgets.

Instant Video Suite

As the name suggests, Instant Video Suite is actually a suite of very closely integrated software that offers you a seamless way of creating video presentations without even realizing that you’ve used more than one piece of software for your project. This way, do not need to master any specific knowledge to use Instant Video Suite.

How to Win the Affiliate Niche Marketing Game?

There are a number of facts that those involved in affiliate marketing should never forget. First, they will be successful only if visitors will be coming to and returning to their website. You need to have a website that has something to offer and that is able to attract people’s attention. If you can’t make them actually interested in your website, then you are not going to see much traffic. Without traffic you have no one to sell to. That’s why the vast majority of affiliate marketing is affiliate niche marketing.

What is niche marketing? We are dealing with niche marketing when the marketers concentrate on very small and specific areas of a market or on products, develop a loyal customer base and specialty services.

The successful affiliate niche marketing companies and websites are those whose owners have realized that they cannot compete with large companies like Amazon if they want to sell say books in general, however, if they concentrate on children’s books, or books about dogs for instance, they have a chance of developing a degree of success and market leadership. They have good chance to become a market leader for that niche.

Many smart affiliate niche marketers have realized that there are certain highly significant and lucrative areas that large companies and operators have failed to establish themselves in as yet. For example, most of the large markets and markets with mass appeal have been dominated for some time by large companies.

For a small affiliate niche market to break into such an area will be very difficult. is successful in identifying some segments of the market that have genuine customers, real demand and the chance to develop revenue, but that the larger companies have not yet gotten into the area, then they can become a leader in this niche before anyone else gets there. Remember this important key to real success in affiliate niche marketing — you have to get to the market before anyone else does.

Anyone who has been involved in affiliate niche marketing will tell you that being the first to arrive on a specific market and develop customer loyalty and following have a huge advantage. This is because niche markets have a strong tendency of going mainstream. Small niches are always the next big thing. But once they become big, they are no longer a niche.

They will soon start attracting larger companies who have a lot more resources to invest in capturing the market. Their next step will be to attempt to take over the market place. However, if you manage to get there before the big boys, then you stand a chance of competing with them and staying one step ahead — at least for some time. This is really the only way of beating the large companies, by getting to the market and establishing yourself as the niche market leader before they arrive with their resources and promotion.

If you are serious about being a successful affiliate niche marketer, then you have to identify a market that has not yet been developed and taken over by large companies and become a leader in that small segment.
